Climate Data Methodology & Provenance

Methodology Direct Summary

ThermoTraveller pairs short-term 14-day numerical weather predictions from Open-Meteo with long-term climatological models calibrated across 508 global destinations. This separation ensures travellers receive precise immediate forecasts for imminent departures and statistically stable monthly profiles for long-range itinerary planning.

1. How ThermoTraveller Works

ThermoTraveller reverses standard travel booking by placing temperature and climate at the core of the discovery process. Rather than starting with an arbitrary city, travellers select their preferred thermal comfort zone (e.g., 22°C to 26°C), and the system filters global destinations that statistically match those conditions during their target travel window.

This architectural pattern enables sun seekers to avoid unseasonable cold snaps and helps active explorers find temperate conditions for hiking, cycling, and city breaks.

2. Destination Matching Engine

The destination search engine operates in two distinct evaluation modes:

  • Historical Climatological Matching: Queries monthly baseline averages with a ±2°C envelope around the user's chosen temperature threshold.
  • Live 14-Day Outlook: Real-time numerical weather telemetry partitioned into Hot (≥29°C), Pleasant (21°C–28°C), and Cool (≤20°C) categories.

3. Data Sources & Provenance

  • Live 14-Day Telemetry: Coordinate-mapped numerical weather predictions provided via Open-Meteo with WeatherAPI failover.
  • Climatological Baselines: Historical monthly averages are modeled based on latitude, geographical altitude, seasonal amplitude baselines, and precipitation models.
Data Provenance Notice: Baseline monthly values represent parameterized historical climatology. ThermoTraveller does not claim direct unverified API feeds from national meteorological bureaus (e.g. WMO 1991–2020 normals, NOAA, ERA5, Copernicus C3S, or the Met Office) unless verified and recorded.

4. Update Frequencies & Limitations

Live numerical weather forecasts are refreshed with a 4-hour caching TTL. Climatological baselines are reviewed periodically to reflect long-term decadal shifts.

Known limitations: High-altitude mountain terrain and coastal microclimates may exhibit localized variance from coordinate-based baselines. Forecast skill naturally degrades for days 8 through 14 of extended outlooks.
